TAEKWONDO
Taekwondo is a martial art, which originated in Korea, using kicks, basic hand and breaking techniques in addition to forms. It’s also sometimes referred to as Korean Karate. Taekwondo and Karate are very similar martial arts forms. However, Taekwondo focuses more on fancier foot work, spinning and jumping kicks and basic weapons training. Taekwondo is famous for it’s 540, tornado, and multiple kicks in the air.
Depending whom Taekwondo is taught by, has become somewhat watered down and it’s practical use in the street could get you hurt. Taekwondo is an Olympic sport and so schools typically adapt their sparring to Olympic rules. This is why it wouldn’t be practical to use in a true self-defense situation due to the limited engagement practice the rules set for this type of sparring. Here at Royal Tiger, our Taekwondo is taught for speed and focus for kids. This helps build strength, self discipline, endurance, flexibility, and character.
karate
Karate is a martial art from Japan and although similar, there are differences between Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Our Karate training focuses more on hand techniques but the kicks are similar in the two styles. Karate sparring is a little more rounded then Tae Kwon Do and there are more weapons training and breaking with Karate. Karate also has Kata’s and Tae Kwon Do has Poomsae, both are a set form of techniques practiced by oneself.
Aikido
Aikido Training focuses on mastering the art of wrist control, throws, sweeps, tumbling and defense. Aikido is an art geared towards teaching the practitioner about how to defend themselves from an attacker when the situation involves the grabbing of your body or clothes or if they have a knife or gun. Aikido training will increase your reflexes and reaction time during an attack that otherwise could cause you great harm. Aikido is not to be confused as a fighting style but more correctly interpreted as being an effective style for self defense combined with MMA training. We use Aikido techniques mainly for weapons disarming.
